The UFC uses eight men's divisions and three women's divisions. Each limit is a maximum: a lightweight, for example, must weigh no more than 155 pounds at the official weigh-in.

How weigh-ins work

Official weigh-ins take place the day before the event. In non-title fights a fighter may come in up to one pound over the limit. In title fights there is no allowance: both fighters must be at or under the limit.

A fighter who misses weight usually forfeits part of the purse to the opponent, and the bout goes ahead at a catchweight if the opponent agrees. A champion who misses weight cannot win the title in that fight.

Divisions outside the UFC

The Unified Rules of MMA list 14 weight classes, including super lightweight (165 lb), super welterweight (175 lb), super middleweight (195 lb) and cruiserweight (225 lb). The UFC does not use them. The women's featherweight division (145 lb) currently has no champion and no rankings.
