Kyle Snyder of the United States is a world champion again. On Friday, October 30, at Barys Arena in Astana, Kazakhstan, Snyder beat Arash Yoshida of Japan on criteria, 4-4, in the men's freestyle 97kg final of the 2026 World Wrestling Championships, rallying from 4-0 down in the final minute. USA Wrestling said it is Snyder's fifth world title and ninth world medal.

Snyder vs Yoshida: how the final played out

According to USA Wrestling's live posts on X, Yoshida took a 2-0 lead into the break, scoring a shot clock point and a step-out point. He extended it to 4-0 in the second period. USA Wrestling said Snyder was still down 4-0 with 41 seconds left before he converted two takedowns to tie the score at 4-4 and win on criteria. InfaWrest also described the comeback as "two takedowns within the final minute."

USA Wrestling posted "Never. A. Doubt." after the final whistle. A full written breakdown of the match had not yet been added to USA Wrestling's live updates page at the time of writing.

It was a rematch between two wrestlers who had split two meetings in 2025, according to wrestling accounts on X.

Path to gold: Sadulaev, Baranowski, Yoshida

Snyder came into Astana as the No. 1 seed and the 2025 world champion. He opened with a 10-0 technical fall over Alperen Tokgoz of Turkey, then edged Russia's Abdulrashid Sadulaev 4-4 on criteria in Thursday's quarterfinals. In that match he trailed 4-1 with 1:34 left before scoring a takedown and a step-out late, with the last point giving him criteria. Later on Thursday he beat Zbigniew Baranowski of Poland 5-0 in the semifinals.

So Snyder's two biggest wins in Astana came the same way: late scoring from behind and a win on criteria at 4-4.

Bronze medals at 97kg

The 97kg bracket was billed as the marquee division of the championships, with four Olympic champions entered. According to InfaWrest, Sadulaev, a two-time Olympic champion, took bronze with a 5-0 win over Baranowski. It is his eighth world medal and his first bronze. Iran's Hassan Yazdani beat Olympic champion Akhmed Tazhudinov of Bahrain 5-0 for the other bronze, so Tazhudinov finished fifth. Wrestling analyst Justin Basch summed it up on X: "In the most stacked bracket in Astana, Snyder is the one standing on top."

Snyder vs Sadulaev rivalry

Thursday's quarterfinal was the latest chapter in the rivalry fans call "Snydulaev". Before Astana, the two had met in three World Championship finals and the Olympic final in Tokyo, RIA Novosti noted. Snyder won the 2017 world final 5-4. Sadulaev pinned him in the 2018 world final and won the 2021 world final 6-0. According to Justin Basch, this week's result makes it 2-2 between them at the World Championships.

Before the tournament, Snyder told reporters at a United World Wrestling press conference that Sadulaev was his toughest opponent: "Just from my past, Abdulrashid Sadulaev is the toughest competitor."

Big night for Team USA

Snyder's gold capped a strong medal session for the United States. Everest Leydecker won the women's 55kg world title, beating Nataliia Klivchutska of Ukraine 4-1, and Bo Bassett won the men's freestyle 65kg title with a 9-1 decision over Vazgen Tevanyan of Armenia. Abigail Nette took silver at 59kg after losing 8-6 to India's Manisha, whom United World Wrestling called India's first-ever women's world champion.

More American finals are still to come. Kyle Dake beat Russia's Ibragim Kadiev 6-3 in Friday's 86kg semifinals and, according to USA Wrestling, faces Arsenii Dzhioev of Azerbaijan for gold on Saturday, October 31. The championships run until November 1.
